Somerset Forest

One mile south of Coleraine this wood is situated on the A54 Kilrea Road and has a large car park with open grass areas and picnic tables. From here two waymarked paths lead through a wide variety of broadleaved and conifer trees. These paths can be used for jogging in conjunction with exercise apparatus situated in a fitness cluster next to the car park. Guidance on how to use this apparatus safely and effectively is given on an illustrated lectern beside the fitness cluster.
Herons nest beside the woodland, and squirrels can be seen further in the wood among the oak and beech trees.

How to get there

The forest is accessed off the Castleroel Road in Coleraine.

Mountsandel Wood

Mount sandel Wood covers 21.2 hectares stretching for nearly 2km along eastern bank of the River Bann to the south of Coleraine.There is a path along the river bank which loops back past the site of earliest known habitation in Ireland:Dun-da-beann or Mountsandel Fort an Early Meosolithic settlement.
The forest is accessed off the Mountsandel Road in Coleraine.

Castleroe Wood

This is a small mixed woodland of 16 hectares to the south of Coleraine on the edge of the River Bann.There is a carpark with two waymarked trails.
