Goles Forest

Goles Forest is a wood consisting of just over 420 hectares lying to the west of Draperstown. The forest area is made up of various conifer species but is mainly Sitka spruce due to the peaty upland soils. The forest rises to a height of 300m where, due to the wind, the trees are noticeably stunted. This provides good habitat for scrub dwelling birds and animals. Here Merlin can be seen hunting occasionally for its staple diet of Meadow pipit.

Goles contains many species of birds and animals. Buzzards can be seen in springtime displaying over the mature Sitka spruce in the valley. The Glenelly River meanders through the lower section of the forest, this river being important for salmon spawning during the winter months. From the small lay-by on the B47, walkers can follow the good circular forest road, which follows the boundary of the forest.

Situated off the B47 Draperstown to Plumbridge road. It is approximately 6 miles from Draperstown . There is parking for approximately 20 cars.
