Cleggan Forest

Cleggan is a large upland conifer forest of 1227 hectares and lies on the southern extremities of the Antrim Plateau.

The forest lies within the North Antrim Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the portion of open ground to the north lies within the Garron Plateau Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI). This area has special European designation as a RAMSAR Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

The forest is predominantly spruce with some areas of larch and hardwoods throughout with many open areas alongside the numerous small streams and hilltops.

How To Get There

Situated to the north of the A42 Ballymena – Carnlough road about 6 miles east of the village of Broughshane. Walkers rarely visit the forest as access is by rough farm lanes, over 2 miles long.

The forest is open every day of the year from 8.00am until sunset.  Admission is free.
