Bann Woods North Forest
Bann Woods North are a series of six small woods adjacent to the River Bann located south of Coleraine and extending south to the Agivey Bridge close to Ballymoney. They total only 34 hectares in size with the largest being only 8 hectares. Local names are Coole Glebe, Colebreene, Gills Upper, Gills Lower, Drumaheglis South, and Eden.
Sometimes refered to as The Bann Dumps, these areas were created when the material dredged from the River Bann, during the 1930’s, was piped ashore and left to dry out in lagoons and so forming these flat areas of fertile ground.
The woods consist of relatively young conifer species with areas of hardwoods and many mixed hardwood/conifer areas throughout. There are some more mature trees along the edges of the river.
The woods contain few roads and are mostly only accessible on foot from farm lanes. The woods are rarely used by walkers as access through the trees is difficult due to the age of the trees and lush undergrowth.
Situated along the edge of the River Bann, to the east of the A54 Coleraine to Kilrea road. Several of the blocks are located to the west of the B class road on the east side of the river.
