The Forest Service has lined up a day of activities on Monday 3 May to celebrate May Day in Portglenone Forest.
Plans include walks through the forest with guides highlighting the history and management of the forest. In addition, young people can go pond-dipping to discover what creatures are in the water. The Forest Service trailer will also be present with information on the woodland creatures. The ‘World of Owls’, a traveling interactive roadshow will also be on hand offering talks on owls, birds of prey, mini beasts and reptiles, with some of these creatures on display.
Forest Service Ranger Stephen McCartney explains further: “May Day in Portglenone has a special focus on encouraging young people to appreciate the natural world. Our attractions are both informative and entertaining.
“Children and young people can find out about Forest Service Management, including why some trees are cut down, and why there are ‘veteran’ trees marked out.
“In addition, Harry Potter’s favourite pet, the owl, will be making a special appearance along with many of his feathered friends. It really is a day for both young and old, or young and owl!
“If the weather is good why not bring a picnic and spend some time exploring the woodland in spring. The normal car park charge of £3 applies and activities begin at 11am and wrap up at about 4pm.”
