The Forest Service is aiming to make people aware of the hazards facing hedgehogs looking to hibernate this winter through an information day being held on Sunday 2 November 2003 from 2.00 to 5.00pm at Tollymore Forest Park.
The hedgehog awareness day offers activities for both adults and children. The fun day focuses on hedgehog friendly gardens, will help people appreciate the dangers facing this creature through a hedgehog hazard hunt and offers art activities and quizzes. People also have the opportunity to meet ‘Spike’ the hedgehog.
The Forest Service aims to raise awareness of hedgehogs and other wildlife through an ongoing education programme which involves Autumn walks around forests for schoolchildren.
Forest Service Guide, Sandra Marsden, explains further: “The hedgehog awareness day is a fun event with a serious message. We hope that it will encourage people to be extra vigilant about hedgehogs.
“At this time of year, hedgehogs look for dark, covered places to hibernate in gardens and unfortunately many are injured through gardeners unwittingly spearing hedgehogs with garden forks whilst turning piles of leaves or compost. Some hedgehogs are also burnt in bonfires.
“Anyone finding a sick or injured hedgehog, especially during daylight hours, should pick it up cover it with a towel and place it in a box. The nearest vet or animal rescue centre should be contacted and arrangements made for the hedgehog to be taken into care.”
