Cycling in Northern Ireland Forests

The Forest Service provides facilities for family cycling and mountain biking at selected forests. This page gives information on forests where cycling is permitted and details of the cycling routes.

Castlewellan Forest Park

On this route you are guaranteed not to get lost. Simply follow the signs around the lake and you'll come across features such as interesting sculptures, magnificent woodland, the National Arboretum and Castlewellan Castle. You'll also find some lovely picnic spots. The path is flat and wide and suitable for all the family.

Castle Archdale Forest

Treat the whole family to a shore-side ride among the trees. There is lots to see and do within the forest and the neighbouring County Park as the cycle route runs through both areas.

Gosford Forest Park

This route meanders through the forest tracks and walks and passess lots of interesting points for the whole family to enjoy including the arboretum, the old gate lodges, the deer enclosure and rare animal breeds section.

Learmount Forest

Start at the community centre and navigate your way through the forest in search of the castle. This gentle circular route offers spectacular views along the way and is clearly signposted.

Gortin Glen Forest Park

There are three cross country mountain bike trails situated in the northern section above the Glenpark Road. The trails are waymarked and graded from Basic, Moderate to Expert. They travel through a variey of forest roads, tracks and woodland sections with varying gradients. The Basic trail is mostly along forest roads with a short section through woodland. It is most suited for family and less experienced mountain bikers. The Expert Trail travels mostly on off-road sections through woodland with some steep gradients and is suitable only for experienced riders. Cyclists are requested to adhere to the Personal Safety requirements posted at the commencement of these trails situated off the Lisnaharney Road. Parking is provided in the Main Car Park of the Forest Park.
