Forestry Bill to become Law

Forestry Act Soon To Become Law

The new Forestry Bill was agreed at Final Stage at the Northern Ireland Assembly on 25 May 2010 and Royal Assent was received on 28 June 2010. The Bill will be known as the Forestry Act (Northern Ireland) 2010.

The intention now is to make operational those sections of the Act that do not require further subordinate legislation and can be implemented without delay. We aim to do this within the next month or two.

Work is continuing on those parts of the Act that require subordinate legislation, eg felling licences, statutory right of access and byelaws. Subordinate legislation will be subject to public consultation. In addition, further work will be required to prepare a woodland register required under Section 6 of the Act, before the commencement of relevant provisions.
